Worm almost ready to roll

Shai-Hulud is just about ready to roll. Tomorrow we disassemble it and pack it up to go. Any help would be appreciated in the afternoon. Last chance to see her without playa dust but with skin.

Oh, did I mention? It has a skin. :-)
The front is open-ish, no covering on the mouth, but they may give us the full thumbs up. Which will mean we'll need more fuel.

Parade Wed at BRC! Other Mutant Vehicles needed to help...

We need some help transporting approx 20 members of the Burning Band to the start of our parade.

The band needs a ride from 8:30 and Esplanade (Spanky's Village and Wine Bar) at about 5:00pm on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd to Camp Sietch Grabrear (located at 6:00 and Fossil).

Parade leaves between 5:30 - 6:00 PM.

If you know of another mutant vehicle that can help bring the band to us, please let me know. We could use more than one, so that no one is overloaded. And spread the word, we don't want Shug using his cattle prod on fellow band mates to herd them there!

Walkers, dancers, stilters, bicycles, mutant vehicles, musicians, off worlders and humans are all welcome to join in the parade too!

Just a short march (more like a crawl) up 6:00 from Fossil to Center Camp.
Be sparkly!
wear something out of this world!

Progress and little worms

Marie, I love your baby worms! Larger than sand trout, at the stage
where they are eating each other.

On the build front, we figured out the Big Question, which we've been
scratching out heads about for months. How to open and close the mouth
easily? BenK's idea and Ted's model and some kibitzing and TADA!
Perfect! Two ropes and two pulleys and it's working. Piece of cake.
See BenK's video.

We had a short day working on the lower rib frame. Ted and BenK threw
in on it and we chowed on Cary's spagetti. Rain chased us away.

Big day Thursday, it's now crunch time and we need all hands on deck
Thursday-Sunday. If you can sew, or cook, or mix drinks, or work metal,
or zip-tie, or wire, or just kibbitz and add to the energy, this is it.
We won't make it there without you. Much glorious fun awaits us!

Mouth opens!

These are the worms I made - fun for dancing, rolling, capturing...

Look forward to meeting you all! Marie

Progress 6/9

Hello, this is the first time I'm blogging Worm build updates directly. So many updates have not gone to this blog, I hope no one has been paying attention. Newfangled bloggimagigger! Over the last week we finished filling out the mouth with a really cool looking grid of heavy steel wires. Awesome looking if I may say so myself! BenK and Noodles chipped in, and Noodles' burner house-mate too. The sides of the people bucket are covered in green carpet with green fur on top! Today we made the last big steel parts, for the frame that goes around the bottom. Over the week (Tue. and Thu.) we'll connect it all up. We're a little behind, but not irreparably so. We even hauled out the carpets from last year's burn and started hosing them off. Much thanks to Grockstar who brought around a bucket of delicious alcoholic something or other. Hours of intoxicated conversation resulted, but work was somewhat impaired. Thanks also to Cary who brought us a pot of spaghetti and drinks today. You two made our days of work feel appreciated. More Tuesday and Thursday! Here's a cool shot from a couple of weeks ago.

Fabric wrangler shout out

I picked up some semi-transparent stretchey black cloth to cover the
back of Wormie's mouth. Fabric Depot at 122nd and Start is doing 40%
off with coupons and 50% off fur, BTW.

So who wants to sew this up into an 8' disc with a cord around the
periphery?
I have the stuff... It's lightweight, and just two seams plus the border.

Map of Camp Sietch Grabrear Location in Black Rock City

We are embedded in the backside of Silicon Village!
Happy to be sharing such a sweet spot with friends...

regarding placement and Camp Sietch Grabrear:

BTW: There are 658 placed Theme Camps this year. 130 camp applications
were rejected (last year, only about 10 were rejected).
About 1/6 of the total camp submissions were rejected. That's pretty
steep. Many worthy camps got the boot.

I am grateful to Placement for the good location (Close in and great
neighbors--Silicon Village) and that we got the ALL real estate we
asked for.

It is now our duty to come together and "Make it so!"

Rich is working on the list of confirmed campers, and fiquring out how
to make all of our stuff fit.
If you have any major changes to your footprint let him know, ASAP.

He will be soon posting a list of confirmed campers ( we are 20
something in number right now).
He still has some questions for some of you.

It is encouraged that you bring some art to contribute to the camp.
It could be performance (dancing worms, serving tea and helping others
learn to play Mondo Croquet) or visual (including decor, signage, or
just plain old "art").

Sunday afternoon, I will be working on Flags/banners for the sTEAp T
house- the community shade structure, if anyone want to help, give me
a call.

Fwd: Build Photos

We has mouthpieces! Rudimentary ones, at least. The ring-sections are
cut and make a circle-type shape, and arms for the petals have been
cut and bent as well! This Thursday, join us at BenD's for another
afternoon of beer and power tools!

Agenda:

weld joining bars and tabs to ring-sections.

cut and bend remaining petal-arms (zomg like ten times easier with
1" than the 1.25" squarestock).

weld petal-hinges to at least one ring-section.

drill mounting holes through channel-iron-hinge-devices and
corresponding holes in petal-arms, for at least one functional petal
arm.
this will also involve:

machine one set of petal arms so that they match nicely at the tip
of the mouth.

bend peepul-bukkit handrail, attach to said bukkit.

which is all I have in my head at the moment. others working on other
projects may have more things that need doing on Thursday.

Kerosene Contributes!

Thanks Kerosene!

Who also kicked in $100 on the donate button.
That pays for our welding supplies.
Bacon can't be used for welding.

Let's get this thing over the top....!

Shuggy here....the Worm is Hungry.
The Worm must be Fed.
That's why we're here.
Once Shai-Hulud rises from the playa, glorious and deadly, there will be lots and lots of people and art for Him to eat.
But first, Shai-Hulud needs a skin.
And what is Shai-Hulud's skin made from?
M-O-N-E-Y. That's right, we are papering the whole goddam PAV with dollar bills. (Wait, no...metaphor, metaphor, c'mon Shug, focus baby...)
That's right, YOUR money must feed the Worm! Yeah, YOU. Put that beer down. Stop scratching for a minute, willya?
You Can Do This!
Look in your purse/car/sofa/bottle collection/neighbor's bedroom/what have you.
If it looks like money, grab it.
Now count it.
Now give it to Shai-Hulud.
Or Alia will take her knife to your liver! Shai-hulud *loves* fresh liver....your choice, really. How hard can it be? Besides, the way we're gonna party on the desert you're gonna *need* that liver! (OK, Shug, bring it on home, c'mon, you can do it...big finish now...)

Take the Shuggy Challenge. Match my $25 Paypal donation. Do it, dammit!! Your karma sucks? Donate to Shai-Hulud, he/she will go out with you next time you ask. Your roommate's a pig? Donate to Shai-Hulud. Within 3 days your roommate will turn Hari Krishna and give his/her Michael Jackson collectibles to you, then move out forever. Out of a job? Donate to Shai-Hulud. Within 7 days you will receive an opportunity to take an online survey which pays ***double whatever you donated***.

So. Take the Shuggy Challenge. Do it Today!! Help me make Pork scream in unexpected benificent ecstasy. The Worm Must Turn!

Thanks Shadout Mapes... and thanks goes to SHUGGY as well for his continued support.

We've received $20 from a mysterious desert dweller, who says:

list my name as "Shadout Mapes" I can't even tell you how excited I am that you guys are doing this! I have been dreaming of doing Dune/BRC crossovers- if I wasn't starting $#@%^&* graduate school the same time as Burning Man, you can bet I'd be there, using my hooks to keep shaihulud on the surface of the desert. Have so much fun!!

Two weeks to finish the structure

From Mahdl-T
Two weeks to finish the structure.

This weekend we'll do an early (10AM) but short day Saturday and then
some more on Sunday (12PM)

Today Ted finished the sealing and painting of the bus (hurah!) And
made the new stronger shade poles.

We mounted up the tubing roller doodad and machined a die for our size tubing. Then we sucessfully rolled 1.25" tubing in a tight curve, and
also got half way there with 1.5". More die machining to do tomorrow.
I'm going to buy a load of steel in the stiffest size we can bend, on
Saturday morning. Truck ride to the Steel Yard! Then on Saturday we'll
roll up the mouth ring. Maybe Sunday, start on mounting it in front.
BenK do you hear that? :-)

worm sightings in the wild

Baron Hardchargin found this one:
http://www.salon.com/wires/ap/us/2009/07/11/D99CE6I80_us_giant_palouse_earthworm/index.html

The worm is said to secrete a lily-like smell when handled, spit at
predators, and live in burrows 15 feet deep. There have been only a
handful of sightings.

[shai-hulud] Project status

From Mahdl-T

The worm build seems to always teeter on the fence as to "is it going
to make it this year?". Most of my pledge of the cost of everything
permanently on the bus is fulfilled, and we have a great deck. We have
a good stairway that tons of people used at Soak, and railings, cables
all around, wood walls filling out the profile up top. We have started
building out the worm-shaped frame.

We have spent all donations. Now, to move forward, we have your future
donations, and what BenD and I put in from now on. We have delivered
on budget, and have received a donation of a sound system. Cameras
turned out to be cheaper than expected. There's $1000-2000 remaining
that we need to spend. Here's what we still need to do:

Day or night permit:
Worm structure and ribs
Mouth structure
Shade poles on top
Mount speakers, wire sound system
+
Night permit:
Mouth lighting tricks
Rib lighting
Camoflage most of the bus
Run power up to roof
add headlights

Day permit
Skin it
Hook up cameras, combiner, monitor
Hook up intercom
Hook up serious Mister fan for driver

Bonus
Fancy mouth bits
Mouth chomp controls

On the issue of skinning it, we have a better plan now, several of us
agree it should work, is easy, packs up small, and doesn't involve a
zillion parts.

Schedule-wise, I believe if we finish the structure this month, we'll
be riding the sands this year, me wormies. How are you going to help?

From Mahdl-T
To Shai-Hulud

We (BenK, BenD, Martin, Visitors Markus and family, and I) had a long day of building. Aside from the worm demanding a blood sacrifice from Markus, we did good. That'll put us on our toes safety wise, lemmie tell you. AlBob visited, and offered his hot tub about a mile down the road.

Ben and Ben and I arrived about noon and stayed 'till 1:30AM or so. I was back in Portland with the bus at 3AM. We finished the stairs but for some painting. Screwed down the decks. Welded loops on to hold the steel cable railing. And we made two long curved tubes that form the upper rear profile of the body, so it'll soon start to look like the monster.

We are moving the builds to BenD's property and occasionally other Portland locations now. Tuesday all day and night: BenD's Whacky shack. We'll assemble it all and cut plywood sides for the peeeple bucket up top. That'll form a worm profile for Soak, from the front of the deck back!

Thursday it's packing up and going. Want to ride with the Worm and help set up? Got stuff to take? I'll offer it on the Portland List soon if nobody takes it.

Title: Build party in Salem

Date: Saturday June 20, 2009
Time: 12:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Location: Iron Clad Welding, Salem

Phone:
 503-810-6133
Notes: Big build party in Salem before SOAK.
Bring food, bring friends, make something wormie!

.Wednesday 6/17...Look Phil, I emailed this to the blog...

From: Mahdl-T
To: ShaiHulud

BenD and I spent yesterday (Tue) at the shop in Salem and we three mounted the stairs to the bus. Needs some more bits before it's done and solid, but it's there. My computer is down there, so I can't upload pics yet. Maybe by next week I'll figure out how to upload pics to the gallery on the website.

Martin is double busy with work and getting the Beast ready for a music festival that's paying him to stomp around. He now only has one day - this Saturday - to help us before Soak. So, if we want to look good for Soak, we need a major showing this Saturday in Salem.
Come on me wormies, let's make it look like a worm!

Week of June 15th

From Mahdl-t / Pork to Shai-Hulud:

Follow up message
Some good steps were accomplished by Martin and I. The last of the deck boards was dyed and varnished. I picked up the double ladder and martin welded it into a single unit. We made and welded on some fantastic high-tech looking mounting plates and so have a nice solid stairway done. Next we mount it to the bus. Cary brought me back from Salem so the bus can stay there as we get ready for Soak.

BenD and folks from Black Rock Boutique, and Rich from sTEAp, and others met this evening to form a village, and amazingly to me, they like the Dune theme so much they want to name the village some Duneish thing.

Here's a pic from Sunday. Tomorrow (Tuesday) BenD and I will go down to Salem to build. Others are always welcome. Thursday BenK and I will be down there. Then it's back at it again over the weekend. Join us?

Weekend Build for June 13 & 14th

From Mahdl-T/Pork
to Shai-Hulud

Up for doing this weekend are:
- Finish the one sheet of plywood deck that didn't get done last week
- bolt the deck down
- finish sealing and foaming the roof inside the bus
- put the bus back together inside & clean up
- sand the sealant to shape outside (orbital sander)
- Buy ladder that will be transformed into a stairway
503-810-6133

If the bus goes down to Salem Sunday:
- Make brackets for stairs and weld them on
- Make struts that hold the stairs out

And more!
Some fraction of this will get done, depending on who shows up. :-)
Free food and drink as always!
Also, come on over just to socialize if you like. I have some really exotic
fruit liquer to tempt you all with, BTW.
